What kinds of races exist in motor sports?

Motorcycling, as well as motor sport, arose at the beginning of the last century almost immediately after the creation of the vehicle itself. The fact is that at first there was no clear separation between cars and motorcycles.

There was a conceptself-propelled crews. As a result, the original motorcycles, the first of which, as a rule, were three-wheeled, competed with cars. After the separation of these two mechanisms on a motorcycle and a car, each of them began to develop separately.

The emergence of motorsport

Motorcycle races arose almost simultaneously with the motorcycle itself. The first cars for riding (1885, Gottlieb Dimer) and the first tricycles (1887, the companyDe Dion-Bouton) were extremely not popular.

Motorsport history

In order to prove the advantages of the new type of transport, the competitions of “mechanical crews” were organized in difficult conditions. It was for these purposes that motorcycle races were held in 1894-1903.

The first motorcycle races were organized by the Automobile Club of France in 1895, after which it was France that became the center of world motor sport. The city began racing was Paris.

Initially, the race (XIX - early XX century) passed as a motor rally for a long distance on existing roads. Requirements for motorcycles and their crews were very democratic - ACF allowed all self-propelled vehicles weighing up to 200 kg to participate in their races.

This restriction allowed to participate in motorcycle racing tricycles and even light 4-wheeled vehicles. During the race itself, the crews could repair their vehicles and even tow them for an unlimited distance. The main thing was that at the next stage of the race and at the finish the motorcycle would enter due to the work of its own engine.

During the night between the stages, the crew had no right to engage in repair or any improvement of their equipment. The passage of settlements was not considered for security purposes. The first official motorcycle races were held in 1899 in Vienna.

However, the complete separation of the races on the auto and motorcycle occurred only at the beginning of the XX century. To develop a unified terminology of motorcycle races, on July 8, 1904, FIKM, the International Federation of Motorcycle Clubs, was formed. It was under the auspices of this organization that international competitions on motorcycles began to take place.

Motorcycle racing disciplines

Track racing, or speedway

Track races are races on elliptical tracks with a special cinder, ice, earthen or grass cover, with two straight sections and two left turns of constant radius, without significant turns. Now there are the following speedway subtypes:

  • classic speedway;
  • long track races (grossspedway);
  • race on the ice track.

Speedway

In these 3 types of races official competitions are held under the auspices of the FIM. However, not all speedway tracks and country rules meet the requirements of the FIM.

Motocross

Motocross races - motorcycle races, passing over rough terrain or on special platforms with natural obstacles and on a closed route. Classic motocross - a length of not less than one and a half and no more than three kilometers, the average speed of motorcycles should not be above 50 km / h.

Stadium-cross (supercross) - the race is held in an open stadium or in a hall with a cross-country track and natural surface (earth, grass, sand). The track must be at least 300 meters long in indoor halls and 400 meters in stadiums.

Motocross

Supermoto

Motor racing on specials. motorcycles, passing on the highway mainly with asphalt pavement including sections of the motocross route (about 70% - asphalt, 30% soil with obstacles). The length of the track is from 500 to 2000 meters.

Enduro

Racing on motorcycles on rough terrain and on tracks with different surfaces. In enduro racing, you must comply with the set schedule and take various additional competitions.

Now from the enduro there are other various competitions with elements of enduro-racing: bachs, extreme enduro, moto-rally-raids.

Enduro

Do you like to ride? Now it is fashionable to ride not only on a motorcycle, but also on horses. Learn more about the benefits of riding.

Cross country

Enduro without sections of the route on which it is necessary to move, observing the usual rules of the road. Despite the rather small difference from the usual enduro, such races of the MMF (International Motorcycle Federation) are a separate type of motorsport.

Road-ring races

Road-ring races - races with a closed highway on high-quality high-speed asphalt. The length of the track (one lap) is at least 3 km.

The peculiarity of the track of such races is the presence of a large number of high-speed turns (both left and right). Depending on the rules of such races, both special motorcycles for such races (MotoGP class) and road modified motorcycles (superbikes) can take part in them.

SCG

Road-ring endurance race (endurance)

The teams participate in the enduro race (several pilots and one motorcycle). Motorcycle pilots change throughout the race. Such races are usually very long.

Motoball

Football on motorcycles. Two teams of 6 players each (3 strikers, 1 defender, 1 goalkeeper and 1 reserve), chase the ball. The goal is to score a goal against the opponent. All players, except the goalkeeper, play on motorcycles. The game lasts 80 minutes and is divided into 4 equal periods of 20 minutes.

Mototrial

Competitions on special trial motorcycles (modified geometry, low weight and power of the motorcycle, standing pilot position) on short natural tracks or special artificial routes with obstacles.

In these competitions, the pilot's skill is assessed in overcoming obstacles. The time limit is set for the passage of the track.

Mototrial

Highway linear races

Racing on road motorcycles of all classes on the roads, closed at the time of the competition for pedestrians and vehicles.

It should be noted that in motor sports, as in equestrian sports, there are a number of individual disciplines.

Skoring

Team contests. The team (crew) consists of a pilot on a motorcycle (or snowmobile), towing a skier on winter snow, ice or mixed tracks. Trails are either closed (ring) or non-closed.

There may be checkpoints on the track. Motorcycles in races are not allowed to use studded tires and snow chains.

Skoring

Figure Driving (Moto Gymkhana)

Competitions in which you need to perform various exercises. It takes place on flat grounds with a hard smooth coating, artificial obstacles and special markings.

Pilots with any driving experience and any road motorcycle (including scooters and mopeds) can participate. On one motorcycle can perform several pilots.

Record setting

Arrivals are initially aimed at establishing a record.Records can be divided into setting the maximum speed at short distances, setting the maximum speed at long distances, driving the distance in the shortest time, setting the maximum speed of any terrain, setting speed or time records for a certain route.

Moto freestyle

Motor Freestyle (FMX)

Long jumps from a springboard on motocross bikes. Jumps are accompanied by the performance of acrobatic numbers by a pilot with his motorcycle. The MMF was recognized only in 2005 as a separate sport, despite the fact that international freestyle freestyle competitions began to take place since 1999.

Stunt riding

Competitions are stunt riding motorcycles. For 2012, it is not recognized as a separate sport, although in Europe international stunt racing competitions have been held for several years.

Appeared in about 1996 in the UK. There are many different tricks now, their number is constantly growing. Most of the tricks are based on riding on one wheel (front or rear).

Stunt riding

Drag racing

Group of races on short distances on straight sections of the road or track. In the race usually involved 2 riders.Road coverage can be different - from high-speed asphalt to sand.

There are races in which special motorcycles, collected for drag racing, participate. Any type of equipment may also be involved, depending on the rules of arrival.
