What is aneurysm and is it curable?

The term "vascular aneurysm" at the hearing of many, but few understand what it means. Meanwhile, this disease is very common and poses a serious danger to humans. Understanding the causes of its occurrence and knowing the symptoms can help identify and stop the disease in a timely manner. Therefore, we decided to list them in our article.

What is aneurysm?

Aneurysm - the expansion of the vessel, caused by the weakening and thinning of its walls. The most common cause of loss by the vessel of elasticity and elasticity is the atrophy of its muscle layer.

Types of aneurysm

Why is this condition dangerous? Thinned vessel walls may tear, causing bleeding. If this happens in the brain, hemorrhage can lead to complete or partial paralysis, failure of speech and visual function, and even death. A rupture of the aneurysm of the heart inevitably leads to death, in the abdominal cavity - to internal bleeding and in the absence of timely medical care - to a lethal end.

But even if the gap did not occur, the aneurysm is a threat to health, because it is the site of the formation of blood clots, which, in turn, can provoke ischemic stroke and heart attack.

Aneurysm is divided into 4 main groups:

  • aorta;
  • peripheral vessels;
  • brain;
  • hearts.

We will tell about each of them in more detail.

What is dangerous aortic aneurysm?

Aortic aneurysmrepresents the expansion of the walls of the blood vessel, resembling the shape of the bag. This type of disease is especially dangerous because it often develops asymptomatically, is late diagnosed and is characterized by high mortality. Depending on the location is:

  • abdominal aortic aneurysm;
  • aneurysm of the thoracic aorta.

Aortic Aneurysm Scheme

As the first happens much more often, we will stop on it. The main cause of its occurrence is atherosclerosis - a pathological change in the arteries, accompanied by the formation of cholesterol plaques.

The symptomatology of this disease depends, first of all, on which organs are squeezed as a result of the expansion of the vessel. Symptoms of an aortic aneurysm, the most common: aching pain in the abdomen, burning sensation and pulsation in the stomach, feeling of coldness in the legs.Formations up to 7 cm in size usually do not manifest themselves, but they gradually accumulate blood clots, which represent a serious danger.

In case of rupture of the abdominal aneurysm, the patient feels a sharp pain in the abdomen and the left side of the lower back, and he is tormented by nausea and vomiting. There is a decrease in blood pressure, increased heart rate, possible loss of consciousness.

For the treatment of this type of disease is used only surgical intervention. Drug therapy is used only to slow the development of atherosclerosis and prevent possible complications.

Peripheral vascular aneurysm

Peripheral vascular aneurysm is much less common and, as a rule, affects the arteries in the groin, upper and lower extremities, and the carotid artery. Among the causes of the development of this disease, injuries, congenital vascular pathologies, Menkeberg arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, erosion of the vessel walls should be noted.

Aneurysm treatment

One can suspect the presence of peripheral vascular aneurysm by the following criteria:

  • pains and cramps in the arms and legs;
  • feeling of pulsation;
  • ulcers on the limbs.

This aneurysm is treated surgically, but surgery is performed only if it is actively growing.

Symptoms and treatment of cerebral aneurysm

Cerebral vascular aneurysmits nature is similar to the above. Its danger lies in a possible rupture and blood flow to the brain - a phenomenon that doctors call hemorrhagic stroke. The presence of a brain aneurysm, which does not increase in size, can only be determined using angiography, computed tomography and MRI examinations, since the patient does not feel any signs of the disease.

If the aneurysm begins to grow, it puts pressure on certain parts of the brain and nerves. Since most often this disease affects the vessels located in the occipital part of the brain responsible for the organs of vision, the following symptoms of brain aneurysm can be observed in humans:

  • eye pain and blurred vision;
  • paralysis of the face.

When you break the patient's aneurysm, they suffer from severe headaches, nausea and vomiting. A person may lose consciousness and even fall into a coma.

A person with a small aneurysm of cerebral vessels should be under the constant supervision of a doctor who records its growth and a threat to health.If it begins to increase rapidly, complex treatment is necessary, the choice of which depends on many factors: the age and health of the patient, the location and type of aneurysm, heredity.

We add that people aged 30 to 60 years are usually susceptible to this disease, and most of them are women.

Heart aneurysm: what is it?

Aneurysm of the heart most often develops after an extensive myocardial infarction, accompanied by the death of muscle tissue and the formation of scar in its place. Science has not yet figured out what triggered the deformation of the damaged heart wall and why it happens in 10% of patients who have had a heart attack. It is only known that the threat of development of aneurysm persists for six months after the heart attack.

Scheme of aneurysm of the heart

Symptoms of a heart aneurysm:

  • pain in the chest;
  • dyspnea;
  • interruptions in the work of the heart.

Such patients are shown only operable treatment. During the operation, aneurysm walls are cut out and blood clots are removed.
