What animals can heal?
Domestic medicine recently began to practice treatment with animals, while foreign doctors use this method since the 70s of the twentieth century. What is animal therapy, whom it can help and what animals can have a healing effect, we will tell in our article.
From the history of animal therapy
Animal therapy, better known abroad aspet therapy, Is a method of treatment, consisting in the use of animals. People in ancient times have noticed: the presence of domestic animals has a beneficial effect on the sick, facilitating the course of the disease and speeding up the healing process.
For example, in Hellas, healing properties were attributed to dogs. This is evident from the myths of the ancient Greeks. Their god of healing Asclepius, according to legend, could turn into a dog, appear sick in this guise and lick their wounds. The ancient Egyptians believed that cats are endowed with the ability to heal. And the people of India were convinced: the singing of birds has healing properties, and therefore the healers assigned their patients to listen to the songs of birds.
The first attempts to use animals in the treatment of mental illness were undertaken in the 18th century in Great Britain. A certain Society of Friends in 1796 opened a hospital for the mentally ill in Yorkshire County, which used atypical methods of healing for such institutions. Instead of straitjackets and the use of medications, dogs were brought to the patients. As a result, the degree of aggression decreased significantly, and the frequency of attacks decreased.
However, the spread of animal therapy at that time did not receive. She gained fame only in the twentieth century with the light hand of a child psychiatrist - American Boris Levinson, who noticed that the little patients of the clinic react positively to the presence of his dog during medical sessions. In 1969, Levinson coined the term "pet therapy", from the English "pet" - "pet".
In our country, this technique is better known as animal therapy and zootherapy. Most often, except for dogs, cats, horses and dolphins are used for medicinal purposes.Animals are more real than humans. They do not want to flatter you, do not want to make any impression on you. Nothing ostentatious. What they are, they are, like stones and flowers or like stars in the sky.Hermann Hesse
Doctors still can not fully explain why the presence of pets improves the condition of people with diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems. But the fact remains: animal therapy really helps patients with cerebral palsy, with Down syndrome, with mental retardation, depression, accelerates the rehabilitation process after injuries and strokes, and also improves the condition of the incurably sick.
Types of animal therapy
Animal therapyinvolves not only treatment, but also diagnosis, and dogs are considered the best diagnosticians among animals. Thus, about 65% of dogs whose owners are sick with diabetes, anticipate and warn about the onset of exacerbation.
The Research Center Aylesbury (USA) found out: dogs can detect the presence of a bladder cancer in humans by the smell of urine. And Canadian scientists by observation proved: dogs feel the approach of an epileptic seizure in humans a quarter of an hour before it starts.
But still the main focus of zootherapy remains treatment. Animal therapy is divided into several types, which we describe below.
It can also be called dog therapy - treatment with dogs. The breed of the tailed doctor does not matter, the main thing is that the dog be non-aggressive and calmly tolerate the presence of people. Dogs well help with neurasthenia, neurosis and hysteria. By the way, in these animals saliva contains the substance lysozyme, which is an antiseptic. Therefore, wounds licked by dogs heal quickly.
Cats can also ease the condition of the owner and help them recover. Their rumbling helps to relax and reduce pressure, and the biofield relieves pain in the joints, normalizes the heart. The frequency of purring home fluffs varies in the range of 20-50 Hz, and some researchers believe: this sound contributes to the healing of wounds, compaction of bone tissue and splicing of fractures.
Method of recoveryIn which horses are involved, Danish athlete Liz Hartel invented. Because of polio, she was bedridden, but she did not give up, but began rehabilitation training, including horse riding. As a result, the body has fully recovered, and Liz even won a silver medal in horse dressage competitions.
Hippotherapy is recommended for amputations, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, injuries, epilepsy.
It has been proven: dolphins help people recover from serious psychological trauma. This method is contraindicated in patients with epilepsy and cancer, but due to the ultrasound effect, it gives good results in cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, minimal brain dysfunction and speech and hearing disorders.
