Spelling of a solid sign in words
A solid sign is the 28th letter of the current alphabet, which immature minds are often confused with soft and do not understand where to write it. A solid sign does not mean any sound, and in modern Russian it performs an exclusively separative function in the pronunciation of certain words. This article will tell you about the spelling of a solid sign in words.
The letter value
A solid sign is one of the oldest letters of the Russianlanguage, which existed in Cyrillic graphics from the very appearance of the Russian alphabet, but denoted at that time a sound that in some roots could be pronounced as the sound of "o". And the solid sign was called at that time "er" and its writing was somewhat different from the present one. But in the twentieth century there was a spelling reform that changed the meaning of the pronunciation of the given letter, and now the solid sign performs only the separating function, but despite this, it plays no less important role in the Russian language and one should not forget about it.
Spelling of words with a solid sign
And now, in our time, there are several elementary rules for spelling a solid sign, which is not at all difficult to remember:
- A solid sign is always written before the letters e, e, w, i. Thus, it is placed after the prefix, if it ends in a consonant, for example: cringe; drive up.
- A solid sign is written in words of foreign origin, such as: adjutant; subject; object and others.
- In compound words, "b" also performs a separation function, where the letters listed above stand at the beginning of the second root. An example would be compound words - two-tier, three-tier).
Note: a solid sign is NOT put in abbreviated words, for example: state language, special code and others.
Let's look at a few more words with a solid sign to avoid confusion any more.
So, for example, the words "shooting", "entrance", "immense", "present" refer to the first category (words with a prefix ending in a consonant letter).
And such words as "pan-European", "conjunctivitis", "disjunction", "injection" refer to words of a foreign origin.
Finally, the words "three-tiered", "four-suited" are complex words, at the beginning of the second root there are the letters "e", "e", "y", "I".
We draw a conclusion:in the words "quadrangular", "biaxial", "three-storeyed", "two-aspected" is not written a separating solid sign, because they use the letters "y", "o", "e", "a", and before them a separating solid sign not put.
