Replacing the video card fan

As always, unexpectedly, the fan (cooler) on my Radeon 5970 video card failed. Judging by the ugly sound-roar-squeal, the turbine bearing was covered.

First of all, I climbed into the Internet in search of replacing the standard cooling turbine. The standard fan used in the Radeon 5970 is called the NTK (HK) Limited FD9238H12S radial fan with 0.8 A at 12 V. As it turned out during the search, these turbines are not sold separately, but are only supplied with video cards, and as far as I I realized that similar fans are used since the 48xx series, only the manufacturer is changing. So I had to look for other options.

The easiest of them is to remove the protective cover from the video card and use only the standard cooling system - the radiator, hoping that the case fans of the system unit will be enough so that the card simply does not burn. But this option did not work, considering that with a video card load of only 20-30%, it warmed up to 97 ºС (I didn’t experiment further), and heated up to 60 ºС without a load.

Studying the cooling system replacement options for the Radeon 5970, which we managed to find on the Internet, in addition to switching to water cooling (I excluded this option right away), we managed to find a cooling system specifically for the Radeon 5970, but a third-party manufacturer, Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5970.

Although according to tests, the cooling system of the video card looked much better than the standard one, the system was called the “killer of video cards” on the Internet, because during its installation it strongly bends the video card's board itself and, when the fasteners are too tight, it simply crumbles the chips on the board. But this option could not be realized, since the Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5970 is simply not available. There are a lot of offers in stores, but they are not in stock, and when it is, no one knows.

Continuing the search on the Internet, I came across a rather interesting and versatile solution for air cooling of video cards or other residents of the system unit - Titan Dual X Holder, but again there is no bummer - there is no sale, and when it is, no one knows. He began to dig in the direction of such decisions and dug out three more options, but still the same bummer - there is not one of them for sale.

Vantec SP-FC71-BL Spectrum Fan Card

Having spent on all these searches for two days, I was thinking of simply buying a new vidyuhi, for example, Radeon 6990.But again, not everything suited me in this version:
First of all, I was simply crushed by a toad, because of the departure of just a cooler to buy a new video card, which costs about 25 cool rubles, and still rustles like a hairdryer (50–70 dB), heats like an iron almost the norm) and eats electricity like an elephant (400-500 W), and the new generation of video cards - the Radeon 7970 or Radeon 7990 is not yet on sale.

Secondly, I still hoped to fix the fan or replace it, even for this I have to go to the market and climb there all day asking “necrophiles”: didn’t they come across a “dead” vidyukha Radeon 5970 (or something family, starting from 48xx), but with a fan in good condition. After all, the Radeon 5970 will still allow playing to the maximum with HD resolution and I was not going to change it at all.

As a result, before reaching the nearest computer store and explaining the essence of the issue to sellers, I saw something on two sticks of an antique look, reminiscent of a Fan Card solution. How exactly this miracle is called, I didn’t even look, I can show only in photos. (Later it was found in appearance that the miracle is called Titan Computer TTC-SC03TB.)
Initially, the sled, on which the 6 cm fan that came with the kit was installed (even xs, could it have cooled at all?), Were connected from below, which would not allow them to push the entire width of the upper groove. Immediately, the decision came - to cut off the bar that connects the slide to the bottom, and to install 2 coolers of the maximum possible size. (This disadvantage is solved quite simply by the brief intervention of the hacksaw.) The 90 mm coolers fit perfectly and both of them stood up, as if it was intended.

As a result, I received a solution like Fan Card, spending 15 minutes on sawing and installing fans, but not for 1,500–2,500 rubles, but for only 600. Quite pleased with my purchase, I was about to leave the store. And even the seller was pleased, rejoicing that they had managed to sell an antique thing, which, judging by his story, had been in their store for almost 2000 years.
But before leaving, I decided to clarify with the seller, recalling the structural features of the radiator on the video card - the radiator is closed with a solid plate from the bottom and it can only be effectively blown out from the end, and whether they have a radial cooler. And - about a miracle, the seller found another relic - something in his own body a la snail, which looks a lot like a miniature hairdryer. The name, again, has sunk into oblivion along with the box, but the photo clearly shows what kind of cooler it is.

Later it was found in appearance that the miracle is called Titan Series TFD-B7530xxxx and is a blover fan for 1U / 2U servers. I bought one of these options: TFD-B7350HH12X, TFD-B7350H12X, TFD-B7350M12X, TFD-B7350L12X, what exactly is not known. If you suddenly need something more powerful (I’m already thinking about replacing myself, presumably there will be less noise), you can buy an option from another TFD-B9733xxxx series, one of these options: TFD-B9733H12X, TFD-B9733M12X, TFD-B9733L12X.
I decided to start shamanism by installing a fan-fan (i.e., if literally translated, it turns outblowing fanas if other fans are not blowing, but just spinning). I already removed the protective cover from the video card and it remains only to attach a new cooler to the place of the old turbine. There is plenty of space on the map and there were no particular problems with the placement of the fan. It was only necessary to combine one of the fan mounting feet with a hole on the video card and drive a self-tapping screw corresponding to the size.

The hole on the map, however, had to be pre-drilled a bit, since it is no more than 3 mm on the map, and the hole in the foot of the fan is more than 4 mm. Since it was impossible to connect the second side of the fan through the holes, I simply glued it to Super Moment.I got all this design tightly.

Field tests have shown that even one such fan of a video card is already enough that the no-load temperature is 35–40 ºС, and under load not more than 60 ºС. In principle, the desired result was already achieved and there was no point in installing a Titan’s Fan Card.
I decided to leave the homemade product based on the Titan Computer TTC-SC03 TB with two 90 coolers on board until the summer, just in case, but then suddenly the heat will be below 40 ºС. The only thing I decided to add was to twist the rev regulator from this thing and stick a fan-fan in the chain, otherwise it makes quite a lot of noise. Reducing the speed approximately 1.5-2.0 times, I did not hear the noise from the blower fan at all, and was completely satisfied with the result, even though the temperature regimes changed slightly: without load 45 ºС, under load to 65 ºС .
