Matriarchy and patriarchy: which is better?
The ancient Greek myths about the militant Amazons, who gave men the role of slaves, suggest the idea: in the history of mankind there was a period of development, which later became known as “matriarchy”. We decided to find out if this is so, and at the same time to check whether there are countries today where a woman is considered the main one in the family, and a minor role is assigned to a man.
The word "matriarchy" is formed from two Greek lexemes "mother" and "power" and means a social order in which the leading role is assigned to a woman. Those who believe thatthe essence of matriarchyis to exchange social roles between a man and a woman are mistaken.
With matriarchy, also called the matrix-centered society, no one forces a man to perform the traditionally female duties of caring for children and doing housework — this is what the woman does. But at the same time she is the head of the family with all the ensuing consequences: the inheritance is carried out through the maternal line,a woman is entitled to have several husbands or lovers, she has the decisive word in the consideration of all issues.
Features of modern matriarchy
It should be noted: in the modern world, matriarchy does not exist in its pure form. There are only some ethnic groups that have certain characteristic features of the matrix-centered society:
- matrilinity - maternal inheritance. This custom exists in one of the peoples living in China. It is called moso. Her representatives live in childbirth, in which there is no place for men: women took over the management of family affairs, raising children and providing food.
The property is transferred from mother to daughter, the husband does not have the right of inheritance. Moreover, he is not a member of the family, he does not live with his wife, but only comes to her at night. Yes, and his husband can not be called: this concept is not familiar to the people of Moso. A man for them is just a partner for the night, although a change of partner in society is blamed;
- matrilocal - the spouse goes into the genus of the wife and takes her generic name. This feature is characteristic of the Khasi people living in India.Khasi men not only do not have their own homes, but also cannot become heirs and give their name to children.
In the family of wives they are in a depressed position, but in the family of a sister, a brother can take the place of honor of her adviser. In 1990, the Khasi men attempted to revolt, but out of 80 thousand men, only a thousand rebelled against female arbitrariness. It turns out that most of them are satisfied with the status quo;
- group marriage or polyandry. Group marriage involves a community arrangement in which women of the same kind can have sex with all men of the gens.
Polyandry means polyandry. The custom of having several husbands has been preserved among some Tibetan peoples, although it is not connected with the loving nature of local women and not with their desire to dominate the family.
Everything is much simpler: according to tradition, a ransom must be paid for the bride, but in poor families, where several sons are raised, there is no money for that. Therefore, a solution was found: one redemption is paid, the eldest son marries a girl, and she becomes his wife all.
The history of matriarchy
The concept of "matriarchy" appeared thanks to the works of nineteenth-century scientists I. Ya. Bachofen and J.-F.Lafito, who claimed: in the history of human development has beenthe era of matriarchy. Unfortunately, pundits have not been able to provide reliable evidence of this theory, and therefore, until now, the question of whether women have ever ruled this world remains open.
True, modern historians admit that there was a period of matriarchy in the times of the primitive communal system. Some time in the way of life of a primitive man there was a change: the original occupation of men - hunting - faded into the background, giving way to hoe-farming and gathering, in which women were engaged. At the same time, the role of women in society has increased.
Regarding the mythical Amazons, historians also cannot come to a common opinion. One of the first mentions of them is contained in the works of Homer, from which it follows: the habitat of the female warriors was the Black Sea coast (southern Ukraine). The Amazons do not appear in the writings of the ancient historians, but modern excavations speak in favor of their existence. Kurgan burials of women, in whose graves weapons lay, indirectly testify: its owners were warriors.
Matriarchy and patriarchy: which is better?
The question of which way of life is better - matriarchy or patriarchy - is not correct in its essence.Matriarchy in the familywhen a woman takes over her material support and the solution of all problems - from the registration of the child to the repair of an apartment, makes the representatives of the weaker sex become tougher and more resolute, and their spouses - to lose ground, taking a passive position.
This state of affairs is contrary to the female nature, instinctively a woman seeks to find a strong man, able to protect and take care of herself.
However, the patriarchal structure of society, when the wife was assigned the role of a wordless appendage of her husband, does not suit modern ladies anymore. They made this clear by organizing a movement for their rights - feminism, thanks to which women have the right to vote, can work in the same positions as their male colleagues, and have other advantages that 19th century women could only dream of.
Some of this was not enough, they decided to learn how to manipulate men, such as the creators of the popular blog "Matriarchy Light."
Gradually, our contemporaries conquer their territory in the world of men, the main thing is that they have enough wisdom to stop in time.
