"Mammoths" on the Mammoth River.
You experience an amazing sensation while watching the musk oxen graze on the open tundra: sometimes it rains, the gusty wind carries low clouds, and the shaggy mounds slowly walk along the hilly plains with stunted brownish vegetation. The wind flutters their long hairs, tears off faded patches and spreads across the tundra. At first glance, it is impossible to understand where in general there is, and where is the backside of these creatures. What is missing is the trunk and tusks.
Probably, this landscape looked almost the same 30 years ago, when real mammoths were walking along these same hills, whose tusks and bones are still carried by the river to the shallow pebbles of shallows.
Taimyr is a peninsula in Russia, the most northern continental part of the land of the Eurasian continent. In 1948, the skeleton of an adult woolly mammoth was found by wintering campers S. Zhigarev and A. Korzhikov on an unnamed tributary of the Shrenk River, which was later named after the Mammoth River in honor of this event.
This musk ox passed between the tents of our camp while everyone was asleep. Well, of course - not all ... Otherwise, where would these pictures come from ...
I had it a day of musk oxen. Honestly, they are surprised by hunters seeking to obtain a license to hunt these animals. A person can certainly frighten them and cause the flight of the whole herd, but they do not need special skills in order to approach them openly almost closely. Anyway, this is probably - as the last mammoth to kill.
It quickly became clear that the musk ox passed through our camp quite purposefully, so to speak in the shortest possible way. On the other side of the river, a female walked along the shore ...
And of course he didn’t see anything but her around ...
And here - I saw. For a few moments, we stared at each other in amazement. And I managed to take a few pictures.
The female on the other side was more attractive!
This, by the way - the same female!
With my intrusive presence, I finally got the bull to try to sort things out. Of course, I tried to show who is the king of nature here, but my arguments, frankly, were not very convincing.
In the eyes of these animals, and indeed in their form - there is something prehistoric.
