Caroling

How is caroling in our time?

Christmas carols are ritual songs performed during the Christmas time - from the Nativity of Christ to the Epiphany. For every Christian, they have a special meaning: carols herald the birth of the Infant God. With their help, people congratulate each other on this bright holiday.

The tradition of singing carols is particularly prevalent in Ukraine, partly in Belarus and Russia, it is best preserved in the countryside.

Kolyadniki, mostly children, come to their relatives, neighbors, acquaintances and ask to be allowed to change. The hosts, in turn, invite guests to the house and present gifts to them for the Christmas message (if earlier it was mostly fruits, nuts and sweets, today it is money).

Christmas carols are accompanied by congratulations on the holiday and wishes of health, peace, prosperity of the host family.

Sometimes caroling is performed by entire musical groups, church choirs together with the abbot of the church (they usually collect donations for church needs). You can also hear Christmas songs in the temples, during the Liturgy before Communion.

From Gospel Plots to Apocryphal Stories

There are Christmas carols, both folk and author.

If the author's songs usually reveal the meaning of the holiday - Christmas of the Savior, then folk songs differ in the plot:

  1. They talk about the birth of the God-child, the rejoicing of angels and the coming of Christ to the Christ with generous gifts.
  2. They show Christ, the holy family - the Virgin Mary and Joseph the Better, the apostles are ordinary people: the Virgin Mary swaddles the Infant, sings His songs, Christ and Joseph work in the field, plow the land, and Mary cooks dinner for them.
  3. They tell about the future of the born child, his death on the cross.
  4. They recall saints whose days of memory fall on Advent (often the Great Martyr Varvara and St. Nicholas appear).

Moreover, in folk carols very often trees (a prototype of the cross-tree) or elements are remembered.

But that's not all: there are carols with the heavenly bodies in the "main roles" - the sun, the moon and the stars are sung as one family.

What will happen if you mix pagan texts with Christian ones?

Where in the Christmas carols come from the lights or the elements? - the reader will ask. If everything is clear with the stars (the Christmas star pointed the way to the Magi), then the moon or the rain forgot in the texts of the carols - it was not immediately clear.

The fact is that songs with references to luminaries and various folk heroes appeared among the Slavs before the adoption of Christianity. They were dedicated to the winter solstice day.

Germans sing Christmas songs

After the adoption of Christianity among many Slavic peoples, the pagan songs were replaced by song evangelism about the birth of Christ. And so the Christmas carols we knew were born.
