Films of Emir Kusturica: an extraordinary movie

The cinema of Kusturica is a delightful world, whose characters think extraordinarily, have their own world view and, as a rule, an incredible will to live.

The style of the Balkan genius was influenced by the works of Federico Fellini and the Prague Film School. Sometimes the director is even called "Serbian Fellini." But Kusturica offered the viewer a completely unique movie through which we can look at life from his point of view. The comedies of Emir Kusturica are sincere and soulful, and the tragedies are deep and majestic. He mixes absurdity and reality, carnival and tragedy, hopelessness and faith in a miracle.

Emir Kusturitsa twice received the "Golden Palm" (for "Daddy on a business trip" and "Underground"), another prize for best director at the Cannes Film Festival for "Time of the Gypsies." But in recent years his work has been discussed less and less. We decided to recall the pictures that added to the lists of world film masterpieces, brought fame to Emir Kusturica and put him on a par with the greatest directors.

Black cat, white cat / Crna mačka, beli mačor (1998)

Black cat, white cat

This is the most cheerful Serbian film director and one of the best comedies ever to appear on the screen. The painting is full of faith in love and family ties. The whole story boils down to the fact that because of the failed fraud, Matko is forced to accept the demands of the mafia Dadan, who not only takes away all the money from him, but also wants to give his sister a dwarf to marry his son Matko. The grandfather of the newly-made fiance decides to sacrifice himself, but fails to wreck the wedding. None of the newlyweds wants this marriage, and they will fight for their happiness.

On the Milky Way / On the Multiple Putu (2016)

On the Milky Way

Monica Bellucci and the Emir Kusturits himself played the leading roles, and this is already interesting. The only drawback of this film, except that in a self-replicator, the director once again raises topics dear to his heart. The central motive of the picture is love with all its madness and dissatisfaction, joy and strangeness. The feelings of the key characters are shown against the background of the Yugoslav war and the poetic Serbian landscapes.

Testament / Zavet (2007)

Covenant

This enchanting tragicomedy will delight lovers of the extravagant style of the Serbian filmmaker.Everything is presented in a fashion for him, but in a somewhat grotesque way. The film tells about a young man who must fulfill the covenant of grandfathers: go from his native village to the city, sell the cow and find a wife for himself. The last task is the most difficult. On the path of the hero expect disappointment, joy and absurd situations. But he can not retreat.

Maradona / Maradona by Kusturica (2008)

Maradona

This is not just a biopic about a man who was born in one of the poorest areas on the outskirts of Buenos Aires and became the greatest football player of the twentieth century. This documentary is a socio-political portrait of Argentina, shown through the personal views of Diego Maradona. In conversations with Kusturica, he also talks about friendship with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, about his drug addiction. The film is worth watching for everyone. Even if you have never been interested in Maradona.

Super 8 Stories / Super 8 Pricha / Super 8 Stories (2001)

Super stories 8

A documentary about the Serbian folk-rock band “The No Smoking Orchestra” touring in Europe, in which Emir Kusturica himself acts as a guitarist.

This movie is not polished in the style of the director, there is no inherent extravagance, the plot is simple, the video does not shine with professionalism, which together can repel the viewer. But “Stories on the Super 8” is an attempt to dig deeper, touch the souls of the band members, explore our attempts to understand each other, connect a person with society and history.

Do you remember Dolly Bell? / Sjecas li se Dolly Bell? (1981)

Do you remember Dolly Bell?

Kusturica shot his first full-length picture at the age of 26. This work brought him the Golden Lion for the best debut film and the FIPRESCI prize at the Venice Film Festival.

The film, shot with amazing plausibility, takes us to Sarajevo in the 1960s, telling us about the life of a 16-year-old boy and shows how the communist ideology influenced ordinary people.

This work of Kusturica was one of the most significant films of the 1980s. This masterpiece with excellent dialogue, sadness of the past time and clearly manifested style director.

Arizona Dream / Arizona Dream (1993)

Arizona Dream

This is the first English-language film of Emir Kusturica and the main roles in it were played by Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway and Jerry Lewis. By Hollywood standards, the film was not just strange, but insane, but was awarded a special prize by the jury of the Berlin Film Festival.

If you want to see something really unusual, "Arizona Dream" will have to place as well as possible. It is impossible for the viewer to imagine which scene will unfold on the screen in the next instant.Actors - the inhabitants of the American heartland. Each of them has his own dream. At times, the characters go crazy, play Russian roulette, then calm down, look for the meaning of life. Some find it.

Dad on a business trip / Otac na službenom putu (1985)

Dad on a business trip

For this film, the jury of the Cannes Film Festival in 1985 unanimously awarded the Golden Palm to Kusturica. It can be said, this is the first masterpiece of the director, which attracted international attention to his work.

Fans of Kusturica, who are familiar with his later work, can expect elements of explosive music, close-ups of animals and surrealistic plots inherent in the director to this picture. But “Dad on a business trip” is a completely different movie. This is a story about the life of the Yugoslavs in the middle of the twentieth century.

The story is on behalf of a six-year-old boy named Malik. His dad is rarely at home, making excuses to his family that goes on business trips, he visits his mistresses, which is why his mother suffers and deeply worries Malik himself. As a result, the father is imprisoned because of the denunciation of the offended mistress, and bitterness and poverty await the family. The final scene still gives hope for the best.

Underground / Underground / Underground (1995)

Underground

"Underground" brought the director the second "Golden Palm". The film tells about the underground, the organizers of which during the Second World War produced weapons to fight the Nazis. The war has gone down in history, but the underground workers do not cease their activities.

All the characters in the Underground are unique, but this film is not about people. It is about how a country is created and how it dies. Here we are talking not only about the tragedy of people, but about the death of a nation. War is a tragic event, the disintegration of the country is something more difficult. Kusturica believes that carnival is the only way to cope with this complex Yugoslav problem.

Like the work of Fellini ("Eight and a half" and "Satyricon"), this film is filled with brass bands and hysterical dances. But throughout the narrative (the action unfolds from 1941 to early 1992) the symphony flows into cacophony.

Life is like a miracle / Život je čudo (2004)

Life is like a miracle

Kusturica again raises the theme of the history of Yugoslavia and the war in Bosnia. As the name suggests, this film is also a story about the miracle of existence itself. The exaggerated theatricality of the action is only a way to emphasize the joys and bitterness of life, to show the senselessness of war that carries fragmentation and cruelty. In the center of the story is the engineer Luca, who is torn between his love and family, wanders among deceptive options, finding himself in a difficult conflict situation.

The Time of the Gypsies / Dom za vesanje (1988)

Gypsy Time

“The Time of the Gypsies” is the crown of world cinema, created at the highest technical level. He absorbed the story of growing up, folk tales, Homer's epic, farce, family drama, love story, the study of evil, tragedy and revenge.

The film with the original title “The House for the Hanging” tells the story of a young gypsy and its following through moral sins, redemption and retribution. Kusturitsa, as if in all sorts of ways, tests her heroes, placing them in hopelessness. And if they retain the human form? Do not betray themselves?

With this picture, the viewer plunges into the world and the time of the gypsies: he feels their emotions, plunges into their lives, and with them searches for his place in the Universe. “Gypsy Time” from among such films that can make us better.
