A series of shots from the global public photo archive “The History of Russia in Photos”. These shots were made by photographer Yevgeny Kondakov in the 1990s, while he was at the forefront of night and criminal life in the capital.
“The History of Russia in Photos” is a joint project of the Moscow Multimedia Art Museum and Yandex Publishing House. This is a publicly accessible archive, combining state, municipal and private photo collections. It covers almost a century and a half of Russian history and already contains 114,983 professional and amateur photos taken in Russia from 1840 to 1999. Pictures in the archive are grouped by subject, exhibition, source.
Below is a selection of photos of Evgeny Kondakov of their “dashing 90s”. In them, the author captures the transformation of a Soviet man into a post-Soviet, when such an almost mythical concept as “new Russian” was formed, and triumphant sexuality vividly and aggressively became one of the main markers of luck and success. These pictures reflect the end of the last century in the way the photojournalist saw it.
