Blue Train (South Africa)

1. Initially, the cars of the train, which was launched in 1923 to transport gold from the mines of Cape Town and Pretoria, were wooden. The current name of the Blue Train received after in 1937, the cars were replaced with steel, painted in blue. Traveling in the blue car is 1600 km between Pretoria and Cape Town in a romantic atmosphere of the colonial times. 4. The first few kilometers of the route from Anchorage to Fairbanks pass through a dense birch forest growing along the Eagle River, on the banks of which you can see moose, bears and wolves. This stretch of road is also famous for the abundance of waterfalls.Approximately 65 kilometers from Anchorage begins the valley of Matanuska - the agricultural center of Alaska, where the cities of Wasila and Palmer are located.4

5. The train makes its first stop in Talkitna, a small town that serves as a landing point for climbers heading for McKinley, North America’s highest peak. On clear days, the top is perfectly visible from the windows of the train. Further the road follows the serpentine of the Susitna River, where you can often see black and brown bears, crosses the canyon of the Indian River, where you can meet beavers and the dams they erected.5

6. Then, on a bridge stretched at the mouth of the Hurricane River in the gorge of the same name, the train crosses the highest point of its route (720 meters). The bridge, whose length is 278 meters, is located at a height of 90 meters above the river.

Looping and diving through numerous tunnels (on the “Ice Express” route 91, one tunnel, the longest length is 15.4 km), the train climbs the Oberalp Pass (2033 meters above sea level), where passengers are offered coffee and a stunning view of the snow-capped mountain peaks, and then descends into the valley along which for some time flows along the Rhine. At the same time, you can listen to an audio tour through the headphones, where you patiently and in detail tell about everything that happens behind large, breathtaking, even part of the roof, panoramic windows.20

21. The picturesque view is combined with red Swiss wine accompanied by a plate with the freshest ham and an assortment of local cheeses - Gruyera, emmental and appenzeller. Food is prepared in the kitchen of the train, its cost is not included in the ticket price. You can order a full 3-course dinner (€ 35.50) or “A Plate of the Day” - an assortment of cold snacks (€ 25).
